    • The Shah was pro-West and he wanted to implement those changes too fast. The traditional Iranian society felt threatened, including the clergy. A sad destiny.

    • Sad, but true. Remember how Ataturk was able to modernize Turkey. Today, fundamentalists call him traitor. He was able to push Turkey into contemporaneity. Iran, the same story. Afghanistan, idem.
      Syria used to be a great place. Assad is an educated gentleman. Look at his and his wife’s presence. 7th century minds, of course, do not like them. And, sadly, the West tends to support “the rebels who fight for democracy” (?!)
